End-to-End Biomass Energy Demonstration as part of the Opportunities North Conference

18 October 2018 - The Yukon Chamber of Commerce (YCC) and the Yukon Wood Products Association are running an operating demonstration of a Biomass Energy generation unit Thursday, October 25, in the open lot next to Lumel Studios Glass Blowing, between 2nd Avenue and Front Street.

The demonstration will be available to be toured by both delegates attending the Oct. 23 - 25 Opportunities North 2018 conference, as well as the general public. The demonstration unit will be available to view from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM on Thursday, Oct. 25.

Yukon Chamber of Commerce President Peter Turner stated, “Biomass is just one of the northern energy solutions that our 170 delegates and speakers from Yukon, NWT, NU, AB, BC and Alaska will be exploring as part of our Opportunities North 2018 business conference next week. Northern energy solutions reduce our dependence on hauling fuels thousands of kilometers for local use, and at the same time keep Yukon energy dollars and jobs in the territory. This is just one of the disruptive, win-win solutions that we will explore at this year’s conference.” For full details and registration, visit www.opportunitiesnorth.com

Yukon Wood Products Association Executive Director, Myles Thorp, added, “The forest industry in Yukon is in the energy business. Our primary market for wood products is biomass in the form of woodchips and cordwood for heating buildings. Our members are committed to full utilization of our timber resources on forest renewal projects in beetle and fire killed stands. In the future a considerable amount of timber will become available from landscape level fuel management areas in and around communities. When the fuel reduction and forest fire fuel abatement areas are identified they will generate a considerable amount of biomass that can be utilized to heat homes, commercial and institutional buildings. Our forests have economic development value in the form of local jobs and energy alternatives to imported fossil fuels.”

Incorporated in 1985, the Yukon Chamber of Commerce is the collective voice of Yukon's business community, working to create a climate conducive to a strong private-sector economy by providing leadership and representation on issues and projects affecting business. The Chamber works with over 750 Yukon businesses, through either direct or Community Chamber membership, as well as the five Community Chambers of Dawson City, Silver Trail, St. Elias, Watson Lake and Whitehorse.
