October 25, 2009

For 24 years, the Yukon Chamber of Commerce has recognized outstanding members of Yukon’s business community in a variety of categories.

On Friday, October 23rd at a luncheon held in the Westmark Whitehorse Hotel, Chamber Chair Mr. Jerome Babyn announced the 2009 Business of the Year, Business Person of the Year and Exporter of the Year awards.

The 2009 winner of the Business Person of the Year Award was Mr. Darrell Pasloski, pharmacist owner of Shoppers Drug Mart in the Qwanlin Mall.

In presenting the award Mr. Babyn said “In addition to operating two very successful drug stores, Mr. Pasloski has played a prominent role in support of the community. Over the years he has supported the Yukon Hospital Foundation, the Tree of Life, Kid’s Day in the Park as well as countless arts and sport groups. He also funded the “Bicycle Helmets for Old Crow Kids” project.

The award for Business of the Year went to Kilrich Industries LP. In business in the Yukon since 1977, this family owned and operated company has seen significant growth. “There have been many milestones for Kilrich” said Dave Austin, President of the Yukon Chamber of Commerce. “One little known fact is that Kilrich was the first trucking company to license and operate ‘B-Trains” into the Yukon.”

In accepting the award on behalf of the company and its employees, partner and Manager of the Dakwakada Development Corporation Mr. Murray Arsenault said “under the direction of the current management team, we look forward to continued success and plan to be around for many, many years”

The Chamber award for Exporter of the Year went to Northern Garments Inc. from Dawson City. Accomplished fashion designer Megan Waterman and her Partner Jake Duncan have taken their fledgling business from the streets of Dawson to the fashion runways of the world in just a few short years. Megan is currently in Toronto studying Computer Assisted Design for the next phase of their ever expanding operation. When advised of the award, Megan said “We are very grateful for this award, take this responsibility very seriously and are very appreciative of the support we have enjoyed from our Yukon community”.
