The Yukon Chamber of Commerce congratulates Latitude Wireless on the extension of cell phone service in many of Yukon’s communities with more to come on line shortly. New or improved infrastructure that enables or enhances economic development in the Territory is a top priority for the Chamber and its members.
“Having this basic piece of infrastructure in place is more than a convenience, it is critical for companies doing business outside of the City of Whitehorse to be able to stay in touch with employees, suppliers and clients” says David Morrison, Chair of the Yukon Chamber of Commerce.
Businesses in Haines Junction, Destruction Bay, Burwash Landing, Beaver Creek, Carcross, Teslin, Tagish, Upper Liard and Watson Lake are now better connected to the business world. Scheduled for completion by end of 2006 are the communities of Mayo, Dawson City, Pelly Crossing and Old Crow. Faro, Ross River, Carmacks and Stewart crossing are scheduled for completion by July 2007.
“This is also great news for the traveling public,” says Sandy Babcock, President & CEO of the Chamber. “This gives peace of mind to the many visitors that travel to the Territory as it enables them stay in better contact with family and friends while enjoying their vacation”.
The Chamber looks forward to the remaining communities becoming connected as well as the addition of a “Blackberry” type service that is in the works.
